Building in downtown Dexter

About The Heart of Maine Resource Center

The Heart of Maine Resource Center was founded in 2018 to try to bridge the gap in resources for the greater Dexter area. There are many existing resources, but people are often not aware of them or cannot access them due to transportation and technology barriers. Our goal is to eventually be a one stop place for community members to be connected to every service they might need.

In 2020 we partnered with Piscataquis Regional Food Center to hold a food distribution in Dexter during the height of the pandemic. This service was well received by the community, and so we decided to make this service a monthly occurrence. Our food distributions began to show just how much access to quality and nutritious foods is needed in this area, even beyond the pandemic. In 2023, we distributed just short of 1600 boxes of food to our neighbors in need. And the need keeps climbing due to reductions in federal assistance programs and the rise in inflation.

In 2019, we began partnering with Group Workcamp, an organization that organizes youth volunteers to give a week of service providing home repairs to communities across the country. Dexter has become a regular service location for Workcamp, and we are able to offer free home repairs to the greater Dexter community biannually. This program ensures that our neighbors have safe, warm, and energy-efficient homes, and it is a great financial investment in our community too.

Our organization is still young and growing. We received our nonprofit tax-exempt status in 2020, and in the same year were gifted the building at 6 Main Street to house our organization. We are in the process of renovating the building to house a food pantry and offer community resources. The second and third floors will be offices and community meeting spaces. We are looking to establish partnership with local organizations to ensure that we are meeting the needs of our community.

Our Mission

To connect our neighbors with the resources they need to thrive.
